Hong Kong BN(O) Visa

Project Description

The UK will introduce a new ‘HK BN(O) visa’ from January 2021 to allow Hong Kong BNO citizens and their close family members to move to the UK. Applicants can apply for the visa from outside the UK or from within the UK. Applicants can choose to apply for a 30-month BNO visa, which can be extended for a further 30 months, or they can apply for a 5-year visa in one go. Visa holders will be able to work and study in the UK but will not be eligible for social welfare assistance. Children under the age of 18 will be able to attend state schools free of charge. After five years of residence in the UK, BNO visa holders can apply to settle in the UK (also known as ‘indefinite leave to remain’). After 12 months of this status, they can apply for British Citizenship, commonly known as the ‘5+1 programme’.

BN(O) immigration applicants must only meet the following criteria 

• Holding a BN(O) passport qualification, less proof of such qualification in the form of a valid BN(O) passport, or renewing or replacing a passport which has recently expired or been lost.
• Usually resides in Hong Kong
• Have sufficient financial means to pay for living in the UK for at least 6 months.
• Commitment to learning English (applicants for naturalisation in the UK will be required to have English at all levels of the Official English Language Proficiency Test (OELPT))
• Provide a TB test report issued by a medical institution in Hong Kong recognised by the UK Home Office.
• Payment of IHS (Immigration Health Surcharge)

Requirements for Naturalisation

• have completed 5 years' residence and intend to continue to live in the UK
• Satisfy the requirement on the number of days of stay (the total number of days of absence in the five years preceding the application must not exceed 180 days).
• No breaches of UK immigration law
• Pass the Naturalisation Test - Life in the UK Test
• Meet the English language proficiency requirement (equivalent to CEFR level B1 or recognised qualification).
