Atlantic Immigration Program
The Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) is an immigration programme for the four Atlantic provinces of Canada. It is an employer-sponsored immigrant programme designed to attract more skilled people and international students to work and settle in the Atlantic provinces. The programme provides 2,000 quotas per year, not counting the quota for the Atlantic Provinces Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).
In 2019, Immigration Canada announced a two-year extension until the end of December 2021 for the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Programme. As of 1 January 2022, the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program will officially change to a permanent immigration program - the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP).
The four Atlantic provinces are: Nova Scotia (NS), New Brunswick (NB), Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) and Prince Edward Island (PEI).
Project Application Requirements
➤ Working Experience
Applicant has at least one year of cumulative (1560 hours, 30 hours per week) paid work experience in the past five years;
The job category is NOC 0, A, B or C. The applicant's work experience must be consistent with the behaviours and primary responsibilities described in the NOC Occupational Code.
➤ Academic Requirements
Applicants must have a high school diploma, post-secondary certificate or degree, or an ECA qualification for qualifications obtained outside of Canada;
Applicants working in NOC 0 or A occupations must have at least the equivalent of a one-year Canadian post-secondary certificate; applicants working in NOC B or C occupations must have at least a high school diploma.
➤ Language Requirements
Applicants with NOC 0, A or B should have a minimum of CLB 5; applicants with NOC C should have a minimum of CLB 4, which is valid for 2 years.
➤ Proof of Funds
Applicants are required to provide proof of sufficient funds to cover settlement and living expenses.
➤ Job Offer Requirements
Jobs offered by employers in the four Atlantic provinces are subject to the following requirements:
1. The job offer must be full-time and non-seasonal;
2. The job offer must be for at least one year (from the time the applicant becomes a permanent resident) in a Class 0, A or B occupation;
3. An offer from an employer to work in a Category C occupation is for a long period of time;
4. The offer must not be from a business in which the applicant and his/her spouse are major shareholders.
Proof of Funds
Before an applicant can be offered a job, the employer must be a Designated Employer in the Atlantic province where the applicant will be working. The employer must meet the following criteria:
✔ The business does not violate the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) or the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (IRPR);
✔ Be in good standing and in compliance with employment standards and occupational health and safety regulations;
✔ Be in continuous, active operation of the same business in the Atlantic Provinces for at least 2 years, or be able to ✔ Be in continuous, active operation elsewhere if approved by the province applying to be a designated employer;
✔ Work with settlement service organisations to help their employees access settlement services;
✔ commit to attending free induction training;
✔ commit to attending free cross-cultural competency training, unless the employer is exempted by the provincial government.
✔ Induction and intercultural competency training.
Induction Training
As a Designated Employer, you will be required to complete a free induction course that includes an introduction to the Canadian immigration system, background on the Atlantic Immigration Program, an overview of responsibilities, and the immigration process.
The induction programme is held twice a month for two hours each time and is conducted in both English and French.
Intercultural competence training
Designated employers are required to complete cross-cultural competency training covering topics such as creating a culturally inclusive workplace, new employee experience and cultural awareness. The training takes half a day and is offered in face-to-face or real-time webinar format and is available in both English and French.
