- our application was submitted on or after 25 October 2012

- spouses
- Common law or cohabiting couples, or
- dependent child
If you are sponsoring a family member to immigrate to Canada, you must provide evidence that you can:
- Provide basic needs for yourself and your family, including food, clothing and shelter.
- Support your relatives financially
- Ensure that your spouse or relatives do not need to receive financial assistance from the government.
Canadian Parent Visa
As of 5 November 2011, applications from sponsoring parents or grandparents will be suspended for up to 24 months. Parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents have a new option for travelling to Canada - the Parent and Grandparent Super Visa. The moratorium allows us to focus on those applicants waiting for visas and reduce the backlog of applications for the parent and grandparent category. This visa is valid for 10 years and allows you to visit your family in Canada for up to two years.
Who is eligible to apply for a ‘Parent’ and ‘Grandparent’ Super Visa? Eligibility:
- Must be a ‘parent’ and ‘grandparent’ of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
- Family members of ‘parents’ and ‘grandparents’ are not eligible for super visas. However, they can apply for an ordinary tourist visa.
- Super Visa applicants must also be considered admissible to Canada and meet other conditions.
The visa officer will consider several factors before deciding whether an applicant is admissible.
The visa officer must be satisfied that the applicant is a true and pure Canadian visitor who will choose to leave at the end of his or her visit to Canada. There are a number of things that the officer may consider:
- Relationship between immigrants and their place of origin
- Purpose of visit
- The person's family and financial situation
- Overall economic and political stability of the place of origin
- Organisations from Canada invited
A ‘parent’ or ‘grandparent’ must also do the following:
- Provided a letter of assurance of financial support from their children or grandchildren (with minimum qualifying income) in Canada
- Prove that the visitor will have Canadian health insurance for at least one year to ensure coverage while in Canada.
- Passed Immigration Screening
