Work Visa

At present, Hong Kong provides four major types of employment visas, including employment visas, entrepreneurial and investment visas, accompanying visas and training visas, and the eligibility criteria for each type of visa vary:

• Employment Visa: Foreigners working for a Hong Kong registered company are required to apply for this employment visa. In addition to a good educational background and relevant experience, the applicant must have been formally recruited for a position for which it would be difficult to find a local replacement.

• Venture Capitalist Visa: Individuals who plan to start or participate in a business in Hong Kong may apply for a Venture Capitalist Visa. The applicant must be the owner of the business and plan to manage the business in Hong Kong. The applicant must be registered as a business in Hong Kong, submit a 2-year business plan, and the business must also make a sustainable contribution to the Hong Kong economy.

• Passthrough Visa (also known as Spouse Visa): If the sponsor is a Hong Kong permanent resident, a Hong Kong resident not bound by a limit of stay, or has been permitted to come to Hong Kong for work or study, or has entered Hong Kong as a capital investor (i.e., as a Hong Kong investment immigrant), his/her spouse and unmarried under-age children may reside in Hong Kong. A spouse who has been granted a companion visa may also work during his/her stay in Hong Kong.

• Training Visa: For applicants who wish to receive training in Hong Kong, the sponsoring company providing the training needs to be of a significant size and capable of providing the proposed training. The sponsoring company will not only have signed a contract with the applicant, but will also be required to teach the applicant specialised skills and knowledge that they would not have been able to learn in their home country. The maximum duration of this visa is 12 months.
